“Tustan” State Historical and Cultural Park – one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in Ukraine. These Carpathian outcrops of towering sandstone rock were formed 25 million years ago and now present a picturesque complex of exotic forms and shapes..
Tustan was an important strategic centre in a unified defensive system, along the line of the Carpathian range, on the South West border of ‘Kyivan Rus’, and afterwards of the Gallician “Kingdom of the Rus”. In the 9th to 13th century, in amongst the rocks, was a defensive system, a customs point and a fortress-town, the central fortified part of which covered 3 hectares. Not only in Ukraine but in all Europe there is not preserved to this day any wooden fortress from the 10th to 13th century – such as was Tustan, one of the unique monuments of Old Rus architecture from the period before the Mongol invasions.
